Common Questions

Things you want to know about massage... but were afraid to ask:

I have never had a massage.  What should I expect?

First, I would spend a few minutes to talk with you and have you fill out a questionnaire.  It is therefore suggested that you arrive a few minutes prior to your session, especially on your first visit.   The questionnaire is designed to gather information about you such as habits, relevant medical history, likes/dislikes, previous massage experience and goals for your session.   This is important since some massage techniques may not be suitable for you.

Once in the massage room, I will explain what you need to do before the session begins and leave you in complete privacy to undress and get on the table.  When I return I will make sure you are comfortable before session begins and will keep you draped at all times, exposing only the body part I am working on at that time.

Do I need to be completely naked?

For most massage modalities, it is preferable that you remove all clothing for easy access to different parts of the body.  Remember that you will be draped at all times and no private areas will ever be exposed or touched.  If you prefer to leave something on, just say so and I will adjust accordingly.  There are massage modalities that are performed with the client fully clothed and this is something I can integrate into the session if you prefer.

What should I do during a session?

Not much is required of you.  Just lie down and relax.  I will move your arms, legs, head, etc. for certain stretches, or massage strokes.   Most of the time these movements will be passive, meaning, I do not need you to help reposition.  When your help is needed, I will let you know.

You do not need to chat to “keep me company”.  This is your opportunity to restore yourself.  Enjoy it!  However, you should SPEAK UP if…

·         The pressure is not adequate.  Ex. It’s too much and starting to hurt or not enough.

·         The temperature of the room is not comfortable.  If you are too cold or hot, let me know so I can adjust heater, give you an extra blanket, turn on a fan, etc.

·         There is too little or too much lubricant.  Ex.  Skin is too dry and you feel too much friction.

·         Your head, neck or other body part is not comfortable.   Ex.  Head cradle needs adjusting; you need extra bolstering or do not feel adequately supported.

·         You just remembered something relevant to the massage session we had not previously discussed.  Ex.  A recent minor injury, an open wound you forgot about, etc.

·         You have to go the bathroom mid-session and cannot relax.  Please, let me know.  I can leave you for a moment to put on a robe and go to the bathroom.  Your comfort is important.

·         You are uncomfortable in any way, no matter how trivial it seems, please speak up and I will try to remedy the situation.

I haven’t been impressed by previous massages.  Why should I try it again?

There are many different massage modalities and each massage therapist has a different style. Finding the right therapist is a very personal choice and it make take some time to find the one that best suits your needs and you are most comfortable with.   There has to be good chemistry and good communication between the two of you.  Let your therapist know what you want out of the session and ask questions.  I believe there are enough massage therapists to suit every type of client.  If you are seeking a modality that your therapist is not qualified for, he or she will most likely be able to refer you to another therapist that is.

I found the music annoying the last time I had a massage.  Can I ask for something different?

Absolutely.  Let me know what your taste is and I will try to find something that is more to your taste.  If you are feeling over stimulated, you may prefer no music at all.  That is perfectly fine, too.  You could even bring your own music if you like on an iPod or MP3 player.

How often should I get a massage?

This depends on your overall health, level of stress, pain, how much exercise you get, etc.  You may feel best getting massages bi-weekly, bi-monthly, once a month … What will dictate the frequency of your massages will be what your lifestyle, schedule and budget allows.  The important thing is to create a habit of self-care and try to have a regular schedule.  I will gladly work with you to customize a plan that fits your needs.

I think I am getting sick.  Should I cancel my appointment?

Massage can boost your immune system.  It also increases circulation and flushes toxins from the body.  Most likely what you are coming down with will be accelerated.  You may feel much worse after the massage, but get better sooner.  If you are too sick to leave the house, or your instinct tells you you’d be better off resting, do not feel bad about cancelling your appointment.  In some instances (fever, infection) you should not get a massage.  Call me if in doubt and I will gladly reschedule if necessary.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask that you allow 24 hours notice for a cancellation.  In an emergency, I understand this may not be possible and will happily reschedule.  However,   if you consistently cancel at the last minute, fail to show up for appointments or are consistently late, I will expect payment for the time that was reserved for your session.   I may require payment upfront before rescheduling future appointments.
